The Biermeister Tournament

Long-Small-BannerimageWritten as part of the coverage to the Big-Event "EC 2007".

This House-Rule was build by openCards user Tribble.

In today's article, I will describe the pinnacle of Star Trek constructed play…The Biermeister tournament!

An idea conceived about two years ago was patiently waiting to be fulfilled: A STCCG tournament celebrating two (almost) silent heroes of the Star Trek universe: Morn and Mr. Homn, men known for few words, but a polite “Thank you for the drinks” is the least they would utter if supported in their favourite pastime: The consumation of vast quantities of alcoholic beverages.

In this category the German STCCG scene has their own heroes: Daniel Sinner and Tobias Meyer are well known for their undiminished playing capabilities after killing a sixpack or so of Beck’s. First edition veteran Roman Meyer (not related) on the other hand gave rise to the well-known saying “Never play against a drunk punk.”

To finish the weekend of the European continental we want to challenge our European colleagues in the so-far-not-quite-olympic sport of drinking beer, combined with a constructed STCCG 2E tournament. Those who prefer chilled prune juice or root beer (good luck finding that in Berlin…), simply can’t hold their liquor or are afraid of the notorious mixture of (Romulan) Ale and (Irving) Berlin, can also enter, but will have no chance to achieve the prestigious title of the “Biermeister 2007” (now that’s something sounding much better than “Keeper of the chalice of Rixx” or “Dahar Master”).

    How to become Biermeister
On Sunday afternoon / early evening, we’ll start a little farewell Constructed with four rounds, in a Biergarten (that’s German for “beer garden”, if there is such a thing in other countries) near the location of the continental. In order to become Biermeister, a participant has to drink as many 0,3 litre glasses (approximately half a British pint or 0,08 US gallon) of beer as he or she collects winning points (I’m talking about those up to 3 points for a Full Win, not 50 glasses of beer for solving “Wormhole Negotiations”).

It is (of course!) permitted to drink more beer than points achieved, but 20 minutes after the end of each round everyone still trying for Biermeister has to have drunken those glasses or is disqualified from the Biermeister challenge (but may still participate in the tournament, which some sissy may even win totally sober - yuck!). After four rounds, from all those still fulfilling their Biermeister duties, the one with the most points (and therefore glasses) wins. Should the evening end in a tie, speed, voluntary extra beers or a vote by the fellow drinkers will decide (as we probably won’t be able to figure out a opposition total anymore).

Tournament is open to everyone, Biermeister challenge only to those legally allowed to consume beer (which means 16 years of age in Germany, but for minors we need to see a permission signed by a legal guardian confident that the participant is adequately trained to drink large quantities of beer). Alcohol-free or -reduced beer is not allowed for Biermeister candidates. Heavy spilling of drinks (especially over cards, which should be reimbursed), vomiting, falling asleep or into a coma will also lead to a disqualification, tournament organizers are not responsible for (among other things) loss of sight, brain damage and inability to get out of bed next morning. It’s a good day to get drunk!
