    We Look for Things

This Card-Review article was written by Kathy McCracken and was published first on "Major Rakals Tal Shiar Headquarters (members.cox.net/majorrakal)" at Oct 21st, 2000.

This article is part of the article serie "Romulan Review" from "Major Rakal (Kathy Mc Kracken)". Also see:

Aefvadh! If you've ever looked with longing - or fear - upon your opponent's Kurlan Naiskos-ed ship or multiple Bynars Weapon Enhancements, now there's something you can do about it. Just enlist the friendly Pakleds and repeat their mantra...

    We Look For Things

While the two functions may look remarkably similar, they're actually different enough to give you a good deal of flexibility. For the first function, you don't need to have a copy of the ship-enhancing card in your deck. All you need is a staffed Pakled ship (currently, the Mondor is the only one there is) to trundle up to the opponent's ship with matching commander aboard, and say, "We'd like to have your Defiant Dedication Plaque to make our ships go." If he has another copy in his deck, he can download it and give you that one -- but if not, he has to give you the one he has in play. Same for a Kurlan Naiskos, Metaphasic Shields, Wall of Ships... if it's an artifact, event, or equipment, and it's enhancing that ship, it's yours for the asking. Just relocate equipment to the Pakled ship, or play an event on the table (or on any of your ships at the location of the Pakled ship, if appropriate).

What's that, you say, you don't have any use for a Wall of Ships, because you're playing Romulan and don't have any Enterprises to enhance? Well, that's the beauty of the first function. It doesn't really matter if you can use the technology you just stole; what matters is that your opponent (unless he had a spare copy) doesn't have it any more!

Now, maybe you don't want to play with the Pakleds, or can't because you're playing Borg. Maybe you'd just rather not get close enough to that Kurlan-ed Dominion Battleship to qualify as being "present" (at the same spaceline location). Maybe your opponent is hiding out in the Gamma Quadrant and you're lacking Wormholes to get there. Or maybe you'd like to be able to get multiple copies of the card in question, so that "once per game per card title" doesn't work for you. Then function number two is for you.

It still requires that your opponent be using a specific card to enhance his ship's attributes, and you must have a copy of that card in deck or Tent to download. But you can do it as often as you can draw and play another copy of We Look For Things. That may not be quite so useful for events and equipment (you could just draw and play the event or Equipment card itself) other than as an alternate way to get the cards out of your Tent, but it could be a nifty way to get multiple copies of a Kurlan Naiskos into play without attempting a single mission. You take a risk of cluttering your deck with them on the off chance that your opponent will be playing with a Kurlan, but if Kurlans are popular in your area, your opponent may find his single Kurlan isn't so intimidating compared to your three.

What cards qualify to steal or download? It's a fairly short list, so I'll include it here.

    • Data’s Head.
    • Kurlan Naiskos.
    • Phased Cloaking Device.
    • Plasmadyne Relay.
    • VR Headset.
    • Bynars Weapons Enhancement.
    • Captain’s Log.
    • Defiant Dedication Plaque.
    • Metaphasic Shields.
    • Nutational Shields.
    • Reaction Control Thrusters.
    • System 5 Disruptors.
    • Tactical Console.
    • Wall of Ships.

    The Major's Combos:

    • We Look For Things + opponent's Groumall with System 5 Disruptors: You'll need a freighter, transport, or merchant vessel to play the card on, but if you can come up with one, your opponent will have used the Groumall's special download for nothing.
    • We Look For Things + Phased Cloaking Device: How about seeding a Phased Cloaking Device under your opponent's mission? He gets to face the dilemmas, and once he has the Phased Cloaking Device, he'll probably use it. Whenever he does, play We Look For Things and download a copy for your own use.
