    Computer Crash

Rao Vantika accessed the Deep Space 9 computer system through a temperature control panel. He sabotaged the data network by purging everything in active memory.

Seeds or plays on table. No player may play a Q's Tent doorway, download any card or play any card that requires downloading. Discard event at end of your next turn.

    Rule hint for this card

    This card has an clarification:

You may activate this hidden agenda event as a response to an attempt to play a Q's Tent or a card requiring downloading (e.g., Activate Subcommands), or an attempt to download a card (e.g., by using the Borg Queen’s skill or any special download icon), but not during the seed phase. The Q’s Tent or card requiring downloading becomes an illegal card play and returns to the owner’s hand; an attempted download is simply aborted (and does not use up any resource). See actions – step 2: responses.

If you initiate the play of a multi-function card such as Bajoran Civil War, and select a function that requires a download, it may be responded to by the activation of this event. The card returns to your hand; you may then play it for its other function, but you are not required to do so.

A card may allow but not require downloading, and thus may be played despite Computer Crash. For example, if Computer Crash is activated in response to an attempted download with Assign Mission Specialists, the download is prevented, but the card remains in play.

You may not suspend the activation of this event by using a special download icon.

    Computer Crash

This Card-Review article was written by Kathy McCracken and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)" at Jul 11th, 1998.

Tired of your opponent fouling up your battle plans by downloading a phaser rifle, or Engage Shuttle Operationsimage and an escape vessel? Does everyone you play against keep a Dathonimage in his Tent so your Shakas are worthless? Want to slow down an Assign Mission Specialistsimage deck for a crucial turn? Does the prospect of your opponent turning a Kivas Fajo - Collectorimage into three downloads for his Borg Queenimage get you down? All you need is a Computer Crash.

Seeded as a hidden agenda, this event can be activated in response to an attempt to play a Q's Tentimage or a card that requires downloading, or in response to any attempted download (such as a special download). The card play or download is prevented (not nullified), just as though the Computer Crash had already been revealed before the attempt to play the card or download. The Q's Tent or card requiring a download would go back to the owner's hand.

In some cases all you are doing is delaying your opponent by a turn. He can still play the same Q's Tent on his next turn to get Dathon (or whatever he needs). The Emissaryimage can still download a Bajoran Wormholeimage next turn. Because the Computer Crash prevents even initiating these actions, the Tent is not discarded, and a special download icon is not "used up." The Borg player will still get three cards from his Kivas (though not necessarily the drones he wanted, and not downloaded into play).

But in many situations the loss of a download can turn the tide of a battle, or cause a card loss or other significant problem. If he just discarded an AMS so he could play another, and attempts to download two mission specialists, you can prevent the download without the AMS being dicarded, because AMS doesn't require a download. So he just wasted an AMS. If he was counting on getting out of a battle with a Launch Portalimage, next turn will be too late.
