The Continuing Committee is proud to announce Shattered Mirror. This thirty-six card expansion set will release on Friday, December 7 and be legal one week later on December 14. As you can tell by the set title, the Mirror Universe is more fully fleshed out in Second Edition, courtesy of the new headquaters you saw late last week. There are also some other tricks you’ll see as more of the set is revealed this week. Another strong theme in the set is the Klingon Affiliation. They never got a chance in the ‘Phase II’ specific expansions, but they are heavily featured here.
We’ll get to cards in a moment, but first, I’ll introduce you to the design team:
- Lucas ‘edgeofhearing’ Thompson and Charlie ‘midnightlich’ Plaine dealt with the all matters Klingon. That isn’t a hyperbole, they looked at all the viable Klingon deck types and found ways to improve them. Not all of them made the cut for the final product, but if there is a Klingon deck out there, they at the very least considered it.
- Ben ‘bhosp’ Hosp and Daniel ‘danny’ Giddings worked tirelessly on the Mirror Universe. Not to be outdone by their Klingon counterparts, one of the first things they did was look at who was available without making other Alternate Universe personnel, specifically the skills and building on that foundation.
Both teams really went above and beyond. We don’t typically publish transcripts of the work done on the design boards, but you would be very proud of the work and sheer amount of research that these teams went through to deliver a superior product.
All Hail Kahless!
Were you wondering why the coming next section from Warp Pack: Access Denied was in a fabricated language? Wonder no more! Not by design, Klingons just didn’t get a whole lot out of ‘Phase II.’ They got stuff here and there, but were never really in the spotlight. They get their chance in Shattered Mirror.
If you have a Klingon deck, more than likely there’s something in Shattered Mirror for you. Take Klaa, for example. Outside the solvers (both speed and mid-range) battle is what Klingons excel at. There’s very little design can give them that wouldn’t tip the scales too much in their favor. Not just that, but there’s a lot of competition among their battle related cards, both in terms of what they can get out of them and how well they can be used. Klaa encourages you to do battle, but his incentive is a simple five points. There are ways to leverage this even further to your advantage, but an early lead in points gets you closer to getting around the corner or ammo for some of your cards down the line.
Look through your decks sitting around gathering dust and get ready to bring them back out into the limelight.
Him, Him and Her
The Mirror Universe is one of the hallmarks of Star Trek. Spanning from that hallmark The Original Series all the way through making an appearance in the debut season of Star Trek: Discovery, they have appeared in multiple tie in works from novels to comics. There’s even an entire even a Role Playing Game supplement dedicated to them. It has existed for years with the Terran Empire in Starfleet and The Original Series, but now you can get into the modern era with the Klingon Cardassian Alliance.
You’ve already seen the headquarters earlier and make no mistake, it stands well enough on its own. It isn’t alone in the set, as there are nine other cards all of which make that deck better. I can’t reveal all of them today, but it might not be bad idea to look at Alternate Universe humans. As Deep Space Nine showed, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance keeps them in their place.
If you were using them as a resource, they’ll be in your discard pile an awful lot and it’s hard for them to solve missions from there. There are some ways to get them out, but probably the most reliable is Ezri Tigan. Not joined with a Symbiont, she’ll reload your deck with all those guys you had to throw out in you path to success. She’s by far the most efficient, but there are some other ways for to get them out as well. And her skill set isn’t all that bad either.
Through the Looking Glass
Enjoy Shattered Mirror during previews for the next couple of weeks. Thanks go out to Playtesters (for tirelessly making sure that everything worked and was balanced) Rules (who keyed in the words correctly) Creative (Who matched the tapestry of Klingon cards with their long history) Art (Who found some great images to go with the words), Programming (Who worked with monkeys behind the scenes to get this set ready for your eyes) and writing (who will have articles coming out to tickle your fancy)
