REPORT on World Championships 2010
The First of Octobre this year the biggest First Edition event took place: Worlds.
When this came to my attention, I was about to start getting an idea what I would play. I was building a nice Jem'Hadar deck. This was about 3 months ago.
Then all the changes came into effect and I was thinking: a lack of SSI and other cards enhanced the Delta Quadrant.
There is this one thing I like to use: Scout Encounter and a Vidiian Scout Ship.
I also wanted to proved that the Delta Quadrant, in spite of all the changes and bans, is still very powerful.
So I designed a Hirogen / Vidiian / NA Delta Borg deck (with One) which used a Pseudo-Hexany consisting of Smooth As An Android's Buttom, The Power, Beyond The Subatomic, Remodulation, Mutation and Nanoprobe Resuscitation.
I also though that there would be many aggressive decks and so my design went in a direction of passive security: Ablative Armour, Transport Inhibitor, Docking Procedures and What Does God Need With A Starship were included – plus three ships with a Cloaking Device.
In addition to that, Kobayashi Maru Scenario in combination with Access Denied could lock a mission where Cytoplasmic Life-Form is being seeded (and eventually faced).
Unfortunately, no aggressive deck appeared and those things mainly served as interference mechanisms.
In each game, the first things to do were:
1) Download a ship (using Spacedoor)
2) Downloading Sulan to Hand and playing him for free
3) Downloading Dr. Telek R'Mor (TMW) and One (Study Protonebula) to my ship
4) Downloading the Borg Triage using Defend Homeworld
When I was lucky, I also had an Alpha Hirogen in hand which I played for free as well.
This way, I had at least 6 personnel in play in turn 1 (or 7 when there was an Alpha Hirogen in hand) PLUS my two mission specialists, which makes a total of 8 (or 9).
In each game, I started a mission attempt in turn 1.
I also included some nasty cards: Strange New Worlds (2E BC) and Leck to be downloaded with Ferengi Infestation to kill a personnel, also the Dauntless and Mission Debriefing.
Game 1
vs. Matthias Coeler playing a mixed Cardassian / Fed deck using Lewis Zimmermann and Crell + Holodeck Doors
Matthias started and I downloaded a Ref card. He was quite fast using several download mechanisms. He ran into my first dilemma combo and got stopped.
I started my first attempt and discovered a mixture of Dead End and other problematic dilemmas which I could not overcome in the first turn.
Matthias started attempting as well and got shot down by a Vidiian Scout ship. His entire crews were killed and he got stranded.
In the meantime, I solved my missions.
Game 2
vs. Christian "The Rules Legend" Krenz playing a mixed Fed deck
Christian, the ultimate dictionary when it comes to rules. I do not know anyonen who knows more about actions - and all the other important stuff.
I was waiting for this confrontation because Christian is one of the best players I know (he and Sebastian). I have lost several games, using Lackey, against Christian in the past.
He was the one who build a 320 card Hexany deck and won several games with it.
This time, I was the one with the big deck :D.
Christian was quite fast, attempting his homeworld. A Vidiian Scout Vessel was revealed and I flew away (since he could have used Defend Homeworld to download virtually every ship and personnel in his deck).
I began to solve some missions and made it through one planet and one space.
He was attemptingn a mission next to his homeworld and I attacked his ship full of personnel.
I tried to get my last mission and ran into a Kelvan Show Of Force + The Cloud which I could overcome and won.
Game 3
vs. Helmut Auberger playing Mirror Fed
This game was quite interesting.
Each mission contained only two dilemmas. I thought: wow. You get through this!
... but no: Seven Of Nine got me in big trouble.
Under the planet missions, there was a combo containing of Medical Crisis + I Hate You.
Since One shared all skills, Seven Of Nine got him Music and each time I had to move and fly to get rid of Seven.
I was unable to get my 100 points because the time ran out.
Game 4
vs. Julius Melhardt playing Cardassians (using several Capture Mechanisms)
I do not even know where to start. This was the longest and the MOST EXCITING game I have played for a long time.
About 15 minutes before the end, it was still at 0:0.
Then, we both started attempting missions.
I got stopped at one mission. I had mission debriefing out and wanted to kill it using Mercy Kill. Julius showed a Quinn, I did so too, he did so too.
He also destroyed some other cards I played.
After 60 minutes, it seemed I won, BUT Julius still had one turn left. It was 80 to 75 at this point.
His last turn took about 15 minutes, but it was great.
He wanted to go into my mission and expected God. So he managed his personnel ... BUT it was Cytoplasmic Life-Form!
His mission required 2 Officer and 2 Computer Skill, BUT I added 2 Computer Skill using Kobayashi Maru Scenario and Access Denied.
So he needed FOUR single personnel with Computer Skill plus two single personnel with Officer. He couldn't get those together and the game ended.
Game 5
vs. Sebastian "I never played well against him at tournaments" Kirstein
Sebastian, the new Vize World Champion 2010, well, since the CC manages tournaments, I never won against him at a tournament.
This game also took a lot of time. To be honest, I do not remember much. It was quite late.
I got a modified loss (but lost only a little bit of my differential).
In the end, Sebastian, Christian and me ALL had two full wins, two modified wins and one loss.
Because of the differential, Sebastian and I got in the Finals.
Final
This was it. ANOTHER game against Sebastian, We knew some of our dilemmas and we knew our decks.
I rearranged my dilemmas, so Sebastian would not know for sure what could wait for him.
After about 45 minutes, it was still at 0:0.
Then, we both saw the clock and began attempting missions.
I made 75 points and there were only 6 minutes left. Sebastian had 30 points and could have made another 50 points, I suppose.
He took his time and I got nervous.
Then he grinned and said: "You made it. I don't have the skills".
Then it was over and the celebrations began. Someone shot a lot of photos - I suppose they will be made public on Open Cards in the next week or so.
It was a great event, that is for sure!
