    Gem

    This Card-Review article was written by openCards user Dukat at Jan 6th, 2009.

    Introduction:
    This review deals with Gem, a card which I have never seen in a game, but that might be unfair due to some interesting strategies.

    The card itself:
    Due to her CIVILIAN classification, Gem reports for free using War Council in the Alpha Quadrant. Integrity 9 is very good and there are not many other personnel with Empathy x2. She also has a Classic Icon which means she can take advantage of Christopher Pike's skill.
    Most important for using her strategically nifty is her ability to be downloaded by Assign Support Personnel in the first turn, if a ship was seeded (for example the Liberia at Caretakers Array or the Husnock Ship) or is being downloaded by Spacedoor at any one outpost.
    Thanks to her AU Icon, she can help staff several ships (mostly ships from the Alternate Universe expansion have an AU Icon, like the Future Enterprise).
    Gem also guarantees a first turn Ancestral Vision personnel without wasting Defend Homeworld for Tabor or waiting for a Q's Tent card in hand to get a Chakotay. Due to the fact that she is Non-Aligned, she can be used by any non-Borg player.

    Strategies:
    Since she can be downloaded in turn 1, she will make first-turn mission attempts easy and free of killed personnel when using Wolf (to save her) and Empathic Touch (to save any one personnel present with her). She can also be boosted with Eyes In The Dark during a mission attempt if an opponent already possesses a ship with personnel aboard.

    Weak Spot(s):
    She has Strength 2 which makes her vulnerable to The Weak Will Perish as well as to any personnel battle while on a Planet in the Delta Quadrant being used for Ancestral Vision.

    Tactics to compensate any Weak Spot(s):
    If she is used for Ancestral Vision, a Bluegill Infestation should be seeded with a copy of her. By that she gains Strength 7 and cannot be stunned. That means an opponent has to have another personnel with Strength 15 to kill her. That requires the used of hand weapons. Since it takes at least one or two of opponents turns to get enough hand weapons in play to kill her, she is protected for the moment.
